Principal Architect, Technical - Billing

We are rebuilding our foundational systems to enable world-class experiences not only for today’s wireless services, but also for tomorrow’s technologies like 6G, IoT, and beyond. The Principal Technical Architect plays a strategic role in designing and evolving end-to-end architectures for enterprise-scale telecom BSS/OSS platforms. This individual will lead the definition of system blueprints that ensure performance, scalability, and maintainability across critical functions such as billing, rating, provisioning, and mediation.

Work closely with engineering, operations, and business stakeholders, the architect will translate complex business requirements into technical roadmaps and guide the adoption of modern technologies while ensuring seamless integration with legacy systems.

The ideal candidate has deep experience with high-volume transactional platforms, strong domain knowledge in telecom processes, and a proven track record to drive architectural governance, system modernization, and multi-functional collaboration across large-scale initiatives.

*** This position will sit in Frisco, TX, Bellevue, WA, Denver, CO, Herndon, VA, Atlanta, GA OR Overland Park, KS. This is not a remote role - this is a hybrid environment requiring 3 days a week in office.

Job Responsibilities:

Technology & System

  • Owns the architectural design and system integration strategy for billing and operational capabilities built on or collaborating with the BSS platform.
  • Maintains architectural frameworks, reusable libraries, and platform configuration standards specific to high-volume telecom billing environments.
  • Supports the full product lifecycle from business requirements through deployment, with a focus on aligning data models and processing flows with rating, invoicing, and account management capabilities.
  • Designs scalable and performant architectures that respect the Billing platform’s legacy structure while introducing extensibility via APIs, wrappers, and modernization layers.
  • Identifies and mitigates complexity in customizations and configurations that could impact implementation efficiency or platform stability.

Strategy

  • Ensures architectural decisions align with enterprise-wide OSS/BSS strategy and telecom-specific standards, advocating best practices for BSS system evolution.
  • Participates in strategic initiatives and modernization programs, serving as the architectural lead or contributor on projects involving BSS extensions, data migration, or integration with newer platforms (e.g., CRM, mediation, provisioning).

Project Management

  • Partners with business and IT team members during the planning and ideation stages to define solution options that align with BSS’s functional and technical constraints.

  • Supports scoping and estimation for initiatives involving Billing, including enhancements, API development, and data model changes, working alongside solution and enterprise architects.

Relationship and People Management

  • Clearly communicates architectural concepts and BSS-specific implementation strategies using documentation, system flow diagrams, and verbal presentations across both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Collaborates with development, operations, and business teams to ensure designs are effectively translated into working solutions.
  • Supports BSS-related architecture governance, audit, and platform health reviews.
  • Stays ahead with modern BSS/OSS platform evolution, legacy decommissioning strategies, and emerging standards in telecom BSS/OSS architecture.

Education and Work Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree In lieu of degree, equivalent industry experience may be considered.
  • 7-10 years experience in software engineering/enterprise architecture/technology leadership across multiple products, systems and/or platforms coupled with strong business acumen and executive presence.
  • 7-10 years experience working in solutions design and enterprise architecture delivering IT solutions.
  • 7-10 years experience in Enterprise applications, PLM, middle-tier services, database, storage, distributed computing, virtualization and/or application technology.

    Base Pay Range: $123,900 - $223,600

    Corporate Bonus Target: 20%

    The pay range above is the general base pay range for a successful candidate in the role. The successful candidate’s actual pay will be based on various factors, such as work location, qualifications, and experience, so the actual starting pay will vary within this range.

    At T-Mobile, employees in regular, non-temporary roles are eligible for an annual bonus or periodic sales incentive or bonus, based on their role. Most Corporate employees are eligible for a year-end bonus based on company and/or individual performance and which is set at a percentage of the employee’s eligible earnings in the prior year.
